It’s Official: The Best Beach Bar in Playa will be called Wah Wah Beach Bar!

So how does a bar and beach club on the beach in Playa del Carmen, Mexico end up being called Wah Wah. Well it was a bit electric guitar, tamale, and George Harrison. According to JJ, the band leader for the Nasty Bastards Band and new owner of the Wah Wah Beach Bar, the name was chosen from from a list of fan submissions as follows.

A Wah Wah Pedal and Volume Pedal in One

A Wah Wah Pedal

Tony and other electric guitarists use an effects pedal called a Wah Wah. It was popularized in the 1970s and used in a variety of music including rock and roll and even in the emerging porn industry.  George Harrison wrote a song called the Wah Wah which he performs in the video recorded in the Concert for Bangladesh in 1972. It is rumored to be written out of frustration with a conflict of Paul McCartney at the time.

Of course there has to be a Wah Wah connection to the Riviera Maya.  Wah is word for tamale in Mayan and also Wah is a slang word for food in general in Mayan. So there you have it…the origins of the name Wah Wah for a beach bar on the Riviera Maya.

Lastly we have some Mayan influence. Wah is a Mayan word for tamale and slang for food in general.
